Prep Baseball Polls: Week 1

Blessed Trinity knocked off a pair of No. 1 teams in the Georgia Dugout Club Tournament over the weekend at LakePoint Sports and moved back into the top spot in the Class 4A rankings after the first week of the regular season.

After opening the season with an impressive 10-0 victory over Cambridge on Feb. 10, the Titans defeated Class 7A No. 6 North Paulding (2-0) in the opener of the GDC Tournament on Friday. Then Blessed Trinity whipped two-time defending Class 1A Private state champion Tattnall Square 9-1 on Saturday before toppling Class 6A No. 1 Houston County 7-2.

A pair of early-season 1 vs. 2 showdowns in Classes 7A and 3A sent a pair of preseason No. 1s tumbling from the top spot. North Gwinnett's Corey Collins smashed a two-run homer in the first inning and pitcher Michael Massey allowed just an unearned run on three hits in a complete-game victory as preseason No. 2 North Gwinnett topped No. 1 Parkview 2-1 on Saturday. The Bulldogs took over the top spot in Class 7A.

And in Class 3A, preseason No. 2 Hart County used a strong pitching performance from Casey Tallent to help the Bulldogs down preseason No. 1 Fannin County 11-4 on Feb. 15. Hart County, who made a run to the state semifinals last year, took over the No. 1 spot.

But the biggest story of the week on the baseball diamond was rain and foul weather, which wreaked havoc on the most schedules and the state's baseball fields, forcing the cancellations of many games.
