Charlton County baseball coach Thad Marchman is used to seeing strong pitching. After three straight appearances in the Class A state championship series from 2012-14, Marchman is used to facing good pitchers.

Strong pitching may be an understatement this season in Region 2-A. Not only does Marchman boast of the region?s top arms in junior Austin Knowles, there are many more ? Lanier County?s Matthew White, Irwin County?s Jonathan Martin, Telfair County?s Louie Harvey and Clinch County?s Brennen Register ? to name just a handful.

Marchman knows the region is going to a stout one again.

Last year, five teams from Region 2 made the state playoffs ? Charlton County, Lanier County, Irwin County, Atkinson County and Clinch County made the Class A public school postseason, while a sixth team ? Telfair County ? just missed.

Atkinson County made the state semifinals. Two-time defending state champion Charlton County had to beat region foe Lanier County in the first round before getting knocked out by ECI in the second round.

With quality arms coming back, Marchman expects the region to be similar in 2016.

?There is?a lot?of experience - Register, Harvey, White, Martin....they all have experience pitching against pretty good offensive teams,? Marchman said. ?Now, they are a year stronger and older.? All of those guys have pitched a bunch of varsity innings.?

Region 2-A schools will play region games on Tuesday and Friday.
